11 Things That Scared Me When I Moved Abroad (That I Overcame)

May 12, 2015

Fear-sometimes it stops us in our tracks. It’s a dream crushing, soul stifling, weakness inducing little worm that eats into the apple of our world. Every dream I have is encased in fear of one kind or the other and if I let it stop me, well, I wouldn’t do a damn thing. Here are just a few of the many things that scared me while moving and living abroad.

1.) Leaving my boyfriend for over a year to live on the other side of the world.

2.) Trying to order any meal in China when I couldn’t speak the language (sometimes I didn’t eat because I was too scared to embarrass myself).

3.) Standing in front of a class of students to teach them English.

4.) Riding on the back of a motorbike in the insane Vietnam traffic.

5.) Learning to ride a motorbike in Thailand.

6.) Driving said motorbike on the opposite side of the road to what I am used to.

7.) Traveling to Japan completely alone.

8.) Leaving my job without knowing when I would find another one to travel.

9.) Making all new friends.

10.) Teaching trial classes in front of potential employers as part of the interview process for teaching jobs.

11.) Not knowing what my life will be like from month to month.
