Being a volunteer abroad is an excellent opportunity to travel to places in the world you wouldn’t normally see while, at the same time, helping the local community with a specific project in aid of an excellent cause. There are some very exciting volunteer opportunities available over the summer of 2016 to take you on your travels to beautiful countries and immerse yourself in the local culture and customs while also learning valuable new skills.
International Volunteer HQ
This organisation was launched in 2007 and provides over 150 volunteer opportunities spread across 28 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. You could be a volunteer on the Sri Lanka Temple Renovation program and help with the renovation, repair and painting of this beautiful ancient building. Another side to the project is helping the local community to establish youth centers, providing the chance to work alongside locals, including village children. This volunteering experience enables you to gain a deeper insight into Sri Lankan culture and history while contributing to two contrasting projects in the local area.
International Volunteer HQ also provides an opportunity for individuals to go to Morocco to teach English or French to the local children. This will greatly benefit underprivileged youngsters in this poorer country and includes introducing them to the basics of IT and marketing to help them to build successful future careers. Volunteers will assist local teachers and help out at summer camps, running workshops and organizing educational activities.
Maximo Nivel is an excellent program offered by Volunteer Forever and is suitable for a wide range of volunteers, from students to professionals. Founded in 2003, Maximo Nivel offers participants the opportunity to volunteer or take part in internships and study abroad, perhaps, for example, teaching English as a foreign language. Individual projects are offered in the Latin American countries of Peru, Costa Rica and Guatemala. These opportunities are great for anyone looking for an enriching Latin American experience based on either a short or long stay.
Global Vision International
This program was founded in 1997 and offers volunteer and internship opportunities in Europe, Asia, Africa and Australasia. One program is the Community Development Expedition in Fiji, where volunteers work with locals on various community initiatives on ViitLevu Island’s east coast. There are different initiatives including environmental monitoring and mapping, education, income generation, women’s empowerment and health management, to name but a few. Volunteers also have the opportunity to relax and explore the local area while they’re there.
This international volunteering organisation has existed for 10 years and places volunteers in countries like South Africa, India, Nepal, Thailand, Costa Rica and Peru. One great program to get involved with is the Thailand Elephant program, which allows volunteers the chance to work with a local team carrying out different tasks focused on the welfare of the camp’s elephants. While you’re there, you can also take advantage of the inclusive Chiang Mai city tour and enjoy free time in Chiang Mai, exploring the markets and Thai temples.
Whatever you decide in respect of where to go and what to do, don’t forget your travel Insurance, essential for volunteers going abroad for any length of time.
